Hello there, and welcome to the Telegraph’s first ever liveblog of an eSports tournament. These really are exciting, strange, digital times. I don’t want to exaggerate the importance of this Fifa competition and certainly not in the context of real world events, but it could be the biggest, most explosive, most enthralling sporting event of all time. Could be. It’s very important that sarcasm carries over my posts for the next few days. Please get on board quickly.
So, what’s going on here? Well, without real life football to enjoy, analyse and talk about all of the time, EA Sports have organised an online tournament to give supporters something to get behind, and the first round kicks off tonight at 5pm. The games taking place are:
- Marseille vs Brondby
- Valencia vs Djurgården
- PSV Eindhoven vs AIK
- Copenhagen vs HJK Helsinki
The winner of the first game goes through to play Chelsea, while Valencia or Djurgarden will play Borussia Dortmund, PSV or AIK will play Man City, and Copenhagen or HJK will take on Ajax.
A full list of the real footballers taking part is below, with standouts including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Phil Foden, Vinicius Jr and Juan Bernat…. but none of those is involved tonight. So it’s just some guys you would never, ever sign for your own Fifa 20 clubs battling it out for a chance in the next round.
