Elizabeth Warren’s brother has died from the coronavirus, reports our US Editor Ben Riley-Smith.
Ms Warren, the US senator for Massachusetts who ran for the Democratic presidential nomination this year, made the announcement earlier today via Twitter.
Don Reed, the eldest of Ms Warren’s three brothers, was 86. He joined the US Air Force aged just 19 and fought in the Vietnam War.
“He was charming and funny, a natural leader,” Ms Warren said. Mr Reed passed away on Tuesday evening.
Ms Warren frequently spoke of her brothers, who all served in the military and some of whom had voted Republican, during her 2020 presidential bid.
The senator posted old photographs of Mr Reed, including one of him smiling in the cockpit of a plane, on Twitter as she paid tribute to her brother.
“What made him extra special was his smile – quick and crooked, it always seemed to generate its own light, one that lit up everyone around him,” Ms Warren wrote.
“I’m grateful to the nurses and frontline staff who took care of him, but it’s hard to know that there was no family to hold his hand or to say ‘I love you’ one more time – and no funeral for those of us who loved him to hold each other close. I’ll miss you dearly my brother.”
