Coronavirus latest news: PHE warned in February against discharges into care homes

As the official UK death toll passed the grim milestone of 40,000 deaths, the tallies in the US and Brazil continue to climb.

The pandemic killed 922 people in the US in the past 24 hours, according to figures released on Friday by Johns Hopkins University.

The latest deaths bring the total in the US to 109,042, and there have been more than 1.89 million cases, according to a real-time tally maintained by the Baltimore-based university at 8:30 pm (0030 GMT Saturday).

In Brazil, an additional 1,005 deaths and 30,830 new cases were reported over the past 24 hours, data released by the health ministry showed on Friday night.

The Latin American nation has now registered 35,026 total deaths and 645,771 confirmed cases.

The US has suffered by far the largest number of both  deaths and infections.

On a per capita basis, however, several European countries – including France, Italy and Spain – have a higher death toll.
